Though Covenant Presbyterian Church has not always carried that name, it has always represented that tradition. What began as an outreach church of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Tennessee became what we now know as Covenant Presbyterian…with an unbroken history of Christian dedication and community service. We celebrate our history as a people of faith since the birth of Christ, and we recall the past in order to prepare ourselves for the future. Our response to this covenant is to govern ourselves by Christ’s love. We covenant to serve God by loving our neighbor, our community, and our family, will be recorded as it was for those who came before us. We pray that we, as a church community, stay mindful of our mission as we go out into the world serving Christ, and as we welcome others to join us in fellowship and service.
Community Service of Lament & Hope
Officers and lay members of Christ Covenant Church comprise our advisory board. God has brought hundreds of college students to Himself and built them into laborers to reach the lost across the globe. Campus Outreach graduates are currently serving in communities and churches from Connecticut to Florida, and from Europe and Africa to Southeast Asia. This magazine named Covenant a Charlottean of the Year not just because it’s devoting $2 million raised from its congregation to help relieve one of this city’s most intractable problems, even though that alone would be an excellent reason.

We believe that we are to carry the bread and the cup out of the church and into the streets, office towers, hospitals, boardrooms, classrooms, grocery stores, soccer fields and homes of our city and world. That’s forced the Housing Partnership, as it concentrated on developing low-income housing along the Freedom Drive corridor, to seek help elsewhere. Freedom runs through one of the poorest areas of Charlotte, but it’s gentrifying quickly because it’s so close to uptown. Porter worries that the market could force hundreds of low-income renters from their homes in the coming years without affordable housing. Governments hesitate to raise taxes, even with growing populations and need for public services, and charitable organizations and businesses have to pick up much of the slack.

The Catholic Diocese of Charlotte entered the market three years ago with a 13-unit complex, Mother Teresa Villa in south Charlotte, built on land the diocese owns. Yet it’s all but unheard of for an individual congregation to invest in a project the way Covenant has. Both Porter and Dodson, who have worked in the field for decades, say they’ve never encountered a similar arrangement. “For a faith-based community to say, ‘You know what, I’m going to partner with an affordable housing developer, and we’re gonna do this’—I don’t know of any,” Porter says.
On Sundays, we have adult and youth Sunday School classes and Morning Worship services (a nursery is provided). The Session is primarily responsible for the maintenance of worship, property, personnel, and the spiritual well-being of the congregation. The basic form of ministry is the ministry of the whole people of God, from whose midst some are call to ordered ministries. These are described in the New Testament and maintained by this church as elders.
